Community Members Help Design New Dos Rios Light Rail Station
April 2018 - Sacramento Regional Transit (SacRT) in partnership with the Portland State University Center for Public Interest Design (CPID) held a design charrette at Smythe Academy Middle School for the new Dos Rios station planned for North 12th Street. The purpose of the charrette was to engage community stakeholders to define key interests and viewpoints, discuss station concepts, and move toward a design direction for which they feel co-authorship.
This engagement process was led by the Center for Public Interest Design (CPID), a research and action center at Portland State University that investigates, promotes, and engages in inclusive design practices that addresses the needs of underserved communities worldwide.
The design charrette began with an optional site tour facilitated by Professor Sergio Palleroni, the director of the Center for Public Interest Design. Participants were instructed to take pictures of what they observed and felt was working or not working. These pictures were projected at the beginning of the design charrette. It served as visuals to begin the discussion on opportunities for improvement in the area.
In addition to community members, many community based organizations were also present including the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, the City of Sacramento, WALKSacramento, Environmental Council of Sacramento, and Loaves and Fishes.
