Farmers’ markets are one of the oldest ways farmers have sold their own agriculture products directly to consumers. Farmers’ markets eliminate the middleman which cut cost and multiple handling of products. Since California farming has high standards and strict regulations, consumers are assured to obtain in season, California fresh fruits and vegetables. Along with the benefits of high quality, low cost, products, Farmers’ Markets serve as a place for social gathering and community engagement.
The Sacramento Promise Zone has 9 farmers markets. Many of the farmers markets allow people to use their federal benefits (EBT,WIC,etc.) and provide a market match. Market match provides matching funds so that more fruits and vegetables can be bought. For example, a shopper who desires to spend $5 of CalFresh benefits at the farmers’ market will get an extra $5 to spend on fresh produce.
Market match helps to empower low-income shoppers to make healthier food choices without worrying about financial barriers. It creates jobs, local economic development, and civic engagement. More so, Market Match helps to stabilize and support farming communities by providing additional income.
